frank martin steps into the spotlight

Written by: Sean

It's happened many times before: An unknown fighter steps into the boxing ring to face a big-name opponent and shocks the world. 29-year-old lightweight Frank Martin hopes his fight with Gervonta Davis on June 15 will end up being one of those situations. While Martin has a perfect record of 18-0 it is Davis who is bringing the attention – and for no good reason. The Baltimore native has been at the top of the fight game for a while after all. And while Martin has excelled in his share of opponents, he's never had the kind of thrilling victories that Davis has against Leo Santa Cruz and Ryan Garcia.

However, Martin is ready for the occasion. “He's going to bring the best out of me,” the Indianapolis fighter said TMZ. “I feel like I have a lot of things that he (Davis), the world, a lot of people don't expect. I'm just ready to get in where I can get the most out of it now.” Of course, Martin doesn't seem worried that he's the underdog leading into next weekend's fight. “I welcome you,” he said in his blank expression. “I'm proud of myself. It fuels me.”

The man was also thankful for the opportunity he found in front of him. Because, if he beats the talented Davis, Martin will be a boxer and more. “This moment doesn't come like that for many fighting players,” he said TMZ. “It's a blessing to be able to get this kind of opportunity.” True enough – and it's a blessing Martin is clearly working to make the most of. “I hope I get the best version of you,” he told Davis directly, “because you get the best version of me.”

That being said, there's no doubt that Davis will be in for a treat when he answers the opening bell to face Martin at the MGM Grand in Vegas later this month. Davis takes his game seriously. Top level fighters are often criticized, but it's hard to argue with the fact that Davis goes into each fight prepared and ready to go. Very well done for the man so far. Whether he will face Martin again is anyone's guess. There is no doubt that each fighter has his own idea of how things will go.
