De La Hoya Praises 5 Vs. 5 Boxing Concept, Challenges Promoters of Rivals
Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya liked what he saw in last Saturday's Queensberry vs. Matchroom '5 vs. 5' in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
De La Hoya blamed Matchroom coach Eddie Hearn's 5-0 defeat on a five-man roster that lacked the talent to beat Frank Warren's Queensberry side.
Hearn has some very good fighters in his stable, but the ones he's put in this team's competitors in the 5 vs. 5 were second stringers and NOT the best guys in his stable. If Hearn had put his best guys on the team, he would have had an all-star team and would have eliminated Queensberry.
I think the problem is that it would cost too much money for Hearn to put these Matchroom fighters in a 5 vs. 5:
– Anthony Joshua
– Devin Haney
– Jaron Ennis
– Diego Pacheco
– Subriel Matias
“5 against 5 is a great idea. I love it.
“We saw that 5 against 5. I knew it was going to be closed. 5 against 5 is a very good idea. I love it,” said promoter Oscar De La Hoya on social media, reacting to last Saturday's Queensberry vs. Matchroom '5 vs. 5' in Riyadh.
“The only issue I had was that Eddie Hearn didn't have a deep enough roster to take on Frank Warren, who has been in this business forever. Obviously, it goes to show you the talent pool that Eddie Hearn has. That's why he went 0-5, but the idea is good. I love it.”
Hearn has some good fighters, but they are too expensive to put on a 5 vs. 5. This is why Hearn's team was shut out. It was very clear going into this game that many of his players would lose, but surprisingly they all lost.
“I can go up to Al Haymon. I can go up and fight Frank Warren. He encourages those who are struggling. I am everything. I like this idea,” said De La Hoya.
I don't think it's true about the 5 vs 5 that happened in the US involving Golden Boy and Top Rank. While De La Hoya can do it, I don't see Top Rank wanting any part of that.
De La Hoya praises Turki Alalshikh for promoting boxing
Keep doing what you're doing, Turki. We love it. Boxing fans really respect that. He spends a lot of money and gives us the fights we want to see,” said De La Hoya.
“I admire him. I respect him for being a big fan of boxing. He wants to fight for wars that will not happen but will not be fought. He is backed by a lot of money, obviously. I think we should praise him. I think we should applaud him.
“He wants to make big fights. He is a big fan. So why not? I am everything. The fight card he did on August 3rd in LA, we have Vergil on the card. Obviously, Tim Tszyu is not on the card, but we are working on a fun replacement. Turki, you are doing a great job. Keep doing what you're doing.
“I respect what he is doing with Riyadh, promoting Riyadh, and the season. We love boxing. We want the best battles. Being a fighter myself, I want to see the best. Turki is not a promoter. He is not the boss. He just loves boxing, and he talks to all the promoters out there and tries to make the best fights happen. So congratulations, Turki. I applaud you,” said De La Hoya.
