Joe Musgrove He landed on the 15-day injured list over the weekend, his second of the 2024 season. The Padres first called the elbow inflammation issue. They provided more clarity tonight, announcing that an MRI revealed a bone spur (link via AJ Cassavell of MLB.com).
While there is relief for Musgrove to avoid any muscle damage, a bone spur will keep him out for a little over two weeks. Cassavell writes that the former All-Star will be completely shut down for two weeks. He could start playing catch then, but that will require several weeks of build-up before he's ready for a major league rehab assignment. Musgrove acknowledged that he may need arthroscopic surgery if the injury does not heal with rest, but that is not currently being considered. He recently received an injection of platelet-rich plasma.
With less than five weeks to go before the All-Star Break, it appears that Musgrove will be out for the second half of the season. His rehab process will determine whether he is back at Petco Park before the trade deadline. The Padres may want to start pitching though — they're already tied to the White Sox breakout lefty. Garrett Crochet – but Musgrove's injury only adds to the uncertainty.
Dylan Cease, Michael King again Matt Waldron they are the clear top three in the rotation right now. Yu Darvish landed in IL for 15 days alongside Musgrove, though it doesn't appear he'll miss much time rehabbing a groin strain. San Diego remembers well Randy Vásquez and a promoted rookie Adam Mazur entering the first five. Vásquez carried a 5.74 ERA in today's start against the Diamondbacks. Mazur made his MLB debut on Tuesday. Jackson Wolfowns a 5.83 ERA over 11 Triple-A appearances, is the only other starter on the 40-man roster.
San Diego's rotation turned in mediocre results in the first few months of the season. They are 14th with a 4.00 earned run average despite ranking fifth in the MLB with a 24% strikeout rate. Darvish, Cease, Waldron and King each allowed between three and four earned runs in nine innings with strong swing and miss numbers. Musgrove had a disappointing season as he struggled to navigate through elbow pain. He threw less than five innings in his first start with a 5.66 ERA and a 20.6% strikeout rate that might be the worst of his Padres tenure.
