A heavy young man in a hurry
TOP class sparring, early finishes and highlight reel moments. So far, heavyweight Moses Itauma has ticked all the prospect's boxes when it comes to drive, work, maintaining good friendships and creating chaos with sharp ends.
Itauma, 19, was last seen knocking out opponent Ilja Mezencev on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyk's upset victory over Tyson Fury. Moses wants to reach that kind of peer sooner rather than later.
Hall of fame promoter Frank Warren knows how to strike a balance between boundless enthusiasm and keeping the rope tight enough to avoid unexpected accidents.
“He's a man in a hurry and I like to see that in a young fighter but we have to slow it down,” warned the Queensberry veteran. “Boxing is about timing. It's about making the right plays at the right time.”
Having the right group of people around, guiding and caring for the fighter, while fending off the leeches and lizards of the bloated team, is all part of boxing.
Keeping busy under the tutelage of Alan Smith, Itauma has moved to a new position in the esteemed company of Anthony Joshua.
“Francis, my son who is in charge, has done an excellent job. Now Ben Davison is coaching him and it's a good team. So we have to look at him outside the ring and choose the right moments,” said Warren Debate News.
Some have compared Itauma to Britain's Mike Tyson because of his style and ambitions. Indeed, Moses has made it clear that he is looking at the record of Tyson who has been the youngest champion in the world for a long time.
Carrying that kind of belief with the wry smile of a man who has seen and felt it over the decades watching competitors and pretenders come through boxing's never-ending swinging doors, Frank believes one thing is true.
“He's very talented, there's no doubt about that, and I think he's going to be the future of heavyweight boxing.”
