Merson says the Gunners could soon be out of the title race
Sky Sports pundit and former Arsenal champion, Paul Merson, has become an acquired taste for many, thanks to his fiery take on the game, which often seems a little extreme and reactionary.
Before visiting the Gunners at Villa Park and playing against Aston Villa who they lost to last season, Merson has been there again.
It's fair to say that his latest opinion won't win him any more friends at the Emirates Stadium.
“This is a huge game. Arsenal were twice finished by Aston Villa last season and that cost them the title,” he said in his Sportskeeda column, as part of his review of the game on Saturday evening.
“If Arsenal lose and Manchester City win this weekend, the Gunners may suffer in the title race. Mikel Arteta's men also face Tottenham Hotspur and City in September, so it's not an easy entry here.
“If things don't go their way, Arsenal could even be out of contention for the title in October! I am not exaggerating, the next four games starting with Villa on Saturday are difficult for them.
“If you lose by two, it's over. I will try to beat Arsenal but I think Villa can score.”
Although the endless way Man City is chasing teams and trophies is becoming the norm, and a small loss could seem to deny Arsenal, throwing away their chances of winning the first title in more than 20 years. this first paragraph is quite ridiculous.
It doesn't look at how strong the Gunners can be this campaign, and that City – or anyone else for that matter – have been very shaky at times.
Merson may look back and wish he hadn't said the words.
