What is the lowest golf course in Scotland, and why?
Hindrik Gommer, panelist since 2015: For just £55, you can play Aberdour Golf Club, on the cliffs of the Firth of Forth. This section 67 goes back to 1896. At 5,447 yards, it's not far by today's standards. But you will enjoy your walks and some of the best views in Scotland. If you take a trip to Machrihanish, be sure to play Dunaverty Golf Club. For less than 20 pounds, you won't get the best links experience.
Simon Holt, panelist since 2019: If you're driving up the spine of the country from Edinburgh to Inverness, don't sleep on the Kings Course at Gleneagles. It has all the old charm you could ask for, set in stunning lowlands as you head to the Highlands. I know you all came for links golf, but this is a great way to break that drive. If I could be jealous and suggest a links course, it would have to be Dunbar. About 20 minutes from North Berwick, it will take your breath away. Bargain greens fees, amazing location and warm welcome. In addition, it has several holes that hold their own in the most competitive golf courses.
Philip Gawith, panelist since 2019: Second Simon at Gleneagles. Tourists tend to focus on the links when they go to the UK, but this is one of the best inland courses anywhere, full of Scottish atmosphere, in a beautiful mountainous area, with a great mix of quirk and challenge.
Tim Gallant, panelist since 2019: For now, it has to be the Kings Course at Gleneagles. After a regular stop on the European Tour, the course has fallen somewhat out of favor with golf's Illuminati as the masses flock to the seaside links. But Kings is the best inland course in Scotland, and it's worth a special trip.
