TRY TO REMEMBER THIS LAST DOOR OF HOME LEARNING LIFESTYLE

Making divots without the ball can be a great way to improve your game. Here it is.

Welcome to Shaving Strokes, the GOLF.com series where we share the progress, lessons learned and takeaways from novice golfers like you — including the speed bumps and challenges they've faced along the way.

If you haven't paid close attention to your divit after hitting the shot, you're doing it wrong.

And why is that? Because if you take the time to analyze how your divot looks, you can learn a lot about how your golf swing looks.

The key to the flushing shot is being able to squeeze the golf ball, so senior instructor Brech Spadley says this stroke drill can help achieve that.

For example, if you have a directional divot – meaning one that points left or right – you know whether your clubface was open or closed for impact. This can help you make some necessary adjustments before your next shot to understand your impact, and by extension, your ball flight.

In fact, you don't even need a golf ball to get a great shot, according to GOLF Top 100 instructor Brech Spradley — and he shows you why in the video below.

Learn from your golf swings with this easy recipe

Golf is a tough game, but it's also one that so many players take easy. In our interview, Spradley demonstrates a unique ball-striking drill that not only helps with contact, but also provides instant feedback — and it only takes a few divots to do. If your swing is struggling, GOAL 100 Senior Instructor Mike Bender says using a bucket of different balls can help you improve faster.

“Basically, pose as if you're going to hit the ball, and take a divot from your trail heel to your lead heel — so all of these divots look like a semi-circle,” Spradley explains. “We try a lot of dirt [towards the back heel]and select more [near the front heel].”

Spradley then takes a number of swings and performs a number of golf divots, leaning back, leaning forward, and using different angles of attack – all to give himself feedback based on his own swing feelings.

Now that he feels that his divots look through all phases of contact, Spradleyy knows what his contact should look like.

“When you hit this [shot]the buttons on your shirt should be pointed about 30 degrees in front of the ball,” he shares.

From there, it's a few dives to test my depth.

“The divot goes forward, your body turns into it, and you put your chest above the golf ball when you hit it so you don't lean back,” he says. “So, I was doing that a long time ago – driving the world slowly to break that [leaning back] habit. “

It's a great way to feel your body and swing movement, and can ensure better contact – don't expect the keeper to be too happy after trying it.
