Devin Haney's Excuses Tour: A Masterclass in Painful Loss
Devin Haney is taking to the media circuit in an attempt to clarify what happened to him in his loss to Ryan Garcia last month.
Interestingly, the fans have no sympathy with Haney calling Ryan a “fraud” and his team wanting to erase his loss from him due to the effects of his PED, which is still being investigated by the New York Commission.
Haney (31-1, 15 KOs) says he felt “something is wrong” with Ryan because he felt “long” in their fight. He says he could have “lost” his life in the ring in that contest, when Haney fell three times and three more that the referee waved.
This week, it was revealed that Ryan (25-1, 20 KOs) tested positive for the banned PED Ostarine in his April 19th and 20th tests.
“Something Was Wrong”
“I can't really say that. It was a tough fight obviously. I'm a special type of fighter, so I've never fought before and the guy was a lot better than me,” Haney told ESPN about his fight with Ryan.
“I've never been beaten like that and I've been there with the best fighters in the world. I felt that something was wrong, but I didn't want to make excuses. I would lose my life in that ring. If a guy takes PEDs, it's dangerous.”
Fans See Through Smoke
Fans see what it really is. Haney's defense was poor, and he couldn't handle Ryan's hand speed, left hook, and pressure.
- Ryan's left hook: That left hook from Ryan was like Haney's kryptonite. Ryan's punches sent Haney into a loop.
- Haney's Defense strategy involves holding excessively in an attempt to minimize Ryan's offense. It didn't work. Clinching is not your friend, Devin.
- The result: More canvas time. Devin got in on Garcia's best shots all night and ended up on the floor six times. People saw it as a situation where Haney's defense was too poor to stop the left hooks that Ryan was hitting him with.
Haney's bad habit of jabbing left him wide open for Ryan's powerful short-range left hook which is his bread and butter hook.
If you know a fighter is in a very dangerous position around him, you don't want to finish him 24/7 the way Haney was during their fight, as he went straight into Ryan's power alley every time he did this.
In the first round of the seventh, Haney was trying to catch up, and he was nailed with a perfect left shot combination next to Ryan.
