Abass Baraou retains European super-welterweight title against tough Macauley McGowan

RESULT: Abass Baraou successfully made the first defense of his European super-welterweight title against Macauley McGowan. After 12 rounds, Baraou was awarded a unanimous decision (117-111, 119-110, 118-110).

IMPORTANT TIMES: Baraou's body shot was a permanent thorn in McGowan's side. Barao's quality is outstanding and he had to succeed because his opponent was relentless in his pursuit of the European title. By the sixth round, McGowan was starting to get battered, but his levels of stamina and heart were impressive. In the eighth, the Englishman fought back and landed on his left hooks. Bararou's footwork got him out of trouble several times, however, and towards the end, his accuracy could lead to a stoppage of the fight.

RECORDS: The champion returns to Germany with a record of 16-1 (9 KOs) and the loser is sitting at 20-5-2 (5 KOs).

TALKING POINTS: Amazing resilience shown by McGowan. It was written by almost everyone that this fight looked like it might end at the end of the field because the champion's body shot looked like it would end the fight for McGowan but how wrong it was and he deserves a lot of credit for staying there for 12 rounds.

QUOTABLE: “I am happy today to defend my title and focus on the future,” said Baraou afterwards.

Discussing McGowan's effort, he said, “We have to show people that there are good programs for them to see and I'm happy to make the fight fun. He was a good competitor and I have a lot of respect for him.”

And looking ahead to the future the WBA 154lbs world title contender commented, “I want to go for the world titles. Yes, I want to stay active as much as possible and see what management has to offer. I'm ready for anything.”

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT: If Baraou can't find a world-class opponent in his next fight then Spain's Oscar Diaz could be the German's next European title defense. McGowan will continue to wrestle and become a fan favorite and hopefully pick up some wins and good paydays along the way.
