David Benavidez Blasts Canelo Alvarez For PPV Price And Fight Choice

Undercard contender David Benavidez has used this week to criticize superstar Canelo Alvarez, criticizing him for overcharging fans for his pay-per-view fights.

Benavidez says Canelo disrespects the fans by charging big money for his fights but failing to fight the top guys, himself and David Morrell.

Benavidez's PPV Hypocrisy

'Mexican Monster' Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs) fails to mention that fans had to pay to watch his last two fights on PPV. Benavidez's last two fights were on PPV against Caleb Plant and Demetrius Andrade. Canelo released Plant in 2021.

Those weren't PPV worthy fights, and his Andrade match only brought in 60K buys. So, Benavidez fights on the undercard of Gervonta Davis vs. Frank Martin this Saturday night.

“This guy charges so much for his PPVs, it's like who's spitting in his face,” Benavidez told the media. “He says he doesn't give *** what you want; he will not give you the best battles.”

What Benavidez considers “The best fights” Canelo has fought, but he doesn't bring anything to the table because he's not a PPV draw, as we've seen in his fights against Andrade and Plant.

Avoiding the Real Test

Fans don't seem interested in paying to watch Benavidez, and you could argue it's because he's failed to test himself against the best during his 11-year professional career.

Benavidez's best wins were against Andrade, a junior middleweight, and Plant, who Canelo had already knocked out. In retrospect, Benavidez should move up to 175 in 2015 and fight Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol. If Benavidez had beaten those two, he would have been a major PPV star and wouldn't have needed Canelo to sell his fights.

“When you hold all the titles, you have to fight the best in the division,” Benavidez continued. “I'm #1, and #2 is David Morrell. He's not fighting me, and he's not fighting Morrell.”

Benavidez has been called many times by the 'regular' WBA super middleweight champion Morrell, and he has not answered the call to face him. Instead of fighting Morrell, Benavidez fought former Andrade on PPV, and it flopped, only bringing in 60,000 buys last November on Showtime.

Benavidez is a hypocrite who criticizes Canelo for not fighting Morrell who is a dangerous fighter when he won't do it himself.

“When is he [Canelo] he will call himself champion if he doesn't fight #1 or #2,” said Benavidez. “He is disrespecting you guys. If you like that, I have nothing to say about it.”

Benavidez needs to practice what he preaches because he doesn't fight the best, and he fled the 168-lb division rather than fight Cuban talent Morrell in what would be his first real test of his career.
