The cut has been made, and there are 36 holes left for the 74 players who will stick around to make it to Pinehurst No. 2 this weekend. What was the biggest disappointment during the US Open?

Zephyr Melton, assistant editor (@zephyrmelton): I'll go with Scottie Scheffler's second round 74 which produced zero birdies (!). His first start to the tournament looked like it was going to be his “bad” round, but Friday was even worse. Pinehurst No. 2 seemed like a course that would suit Scheffler's game well, but so far he's been looking outside his comfort zone. It will be interesting to see if he can put together a little run playing early tomorrow.

Josh Sens, senior author(@JoshSens): You mean, except where I picked my US Open pool Sepp Straka made a rattle-the-flagstick triple bogey? Brooks Koepka can be polarizing, but he sure is compelling when he plays well in the big game. When he birdied the 18th (his 9th hole of the day) to get back on top, I expected to see the stone-cold killer Brooks the entire way. Tears came to her eyes when she tried to hang up the number.

Ryan Barath, senior editor, equipment (@RDSBarath): You could call this a cop-out, but my biggest disappointment is that many golfers currently sit at five over par. We have Tommy Fleetwood, Matt Fitzpatrick, Cameron Young, Brooks Koepka, and Scottie Scheffler. Add in the fact that Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa are sitting better at four over and those are big names that won't compete come Sunday afternoon (unless they pull off a miracle tomorrow). Look, the leaderboard is great, and I don't hold back the top players, but at some point, these players need to step up every now and then in these big events.

Jessica Marksbury, senior editor (@Jess_Marksbury): I'll take the Big Cat. There was a time, not too long ago, when we speculated that Pinehurst might be one of Tiger's last chances to land a major championship at a course other than Augusta National. Unfortunately, it's clear that, while we know Tiger has the shots, he just isn't scoring where he needs to be to be a factor on the leaderboard. A big championship weekend without him is always strange.

Dylan Dethier, senior editor (@dylan_dethier): Jeez, I'm with you Jess! Ironically, Tiger looked … good? There were a few sloppy mistakes that cost him, but there were also a few bells that could have been flagged but kicked in difficult positions. If his appearances are rare it is surprising to feel deprived in a week full of Tigers. But I'll throw Viktor Hovland into the mix. He came into the PGA Championship with some momentum but played so poorly on Thursday – 78 – that a second-round 68 wasn't enough to get him into the weekend, never mind contention.

Jack Hirsh, assistant editor (@JR_HIRSHey): Justin Thomas. I mean how long is this going to go on? Every time we felt like JT had some momentum the past few years, it's been a disappointing cut to the big one. Yes, Spieth's decline has lasted longer than JT's, so far, but Spieth wasn't playing 80 in all the majors. Thomas was 152 in the SG: Approach this week, losing by three shots to a field that included a high school teacher. Yes, the high school teacher nailed it better than Justin scaring Thomas this week. That's just crazy to think about.
