Ellie Scotney's purse bid vs. Mea Motu is delayed

Written by Declan Taylor

Ellie Scotney's bid to defend her world title against Mea Motu has been shelved as both sides hope to reach an agreement late on.

The IBF has ordered its champion Scottney to defend against his current challenger, the 19-0 (7) New Zealander, and the purse bid is scheduled for July 9.

However, as the talks are progressing well, both sides have asked for an extension of the negotiation period to fight without the necessary request. And, on the day of the application, the IBF agreed.

Matchroom CEO Frank Smith told us Debate News: “The fund application is delayed by 10 days.

“We may be able to make a deal. Both parties have requested it because we have hope. We hope we can put something together, definitely.”

When asked if Matchroom was planning to play the fight in the UK, Smith added: “We're not sure about the fight schedule yet, we're still working out the final details.”

“I know Eddie met Ellie and Shane [McGuigan] another day. Hopefully we'll have some news on that soon.”

Scotney, 9-0, is the current joint super-bantamweight champion after adding the WBO belt held by Segolene Lefebvre to her collection on April 13.

The Catford ace has plans to be unopposed but now it looks like he will make his first IBF non-binding defence.

Motu, on the other hand, is coming off the back of a second round win over the undefeated Noppaket Srisawas in April.
