Hungary vs Switzerland: Preview, predictions and schedule

Touted by many as dark horses, Hungary begin their Euro 2024 campaign against Switzerland on Saturday.

Germany and Scotland will face each other in the opening game of the tournament on Friday night, and both teams will be closely watching the events that will be held in Munich before their meetings with both teams. Group A is set to perform well, even if the hosts are clear favorites to come out on top.

Hungary emerged as one of the most impressive teams in the qualifiers as they won their group without losing a game. Marco Rossi has turned his team into one that is incredibly difficult to beat, with its success built on strong and solid defensive foundations.

They will be a tough match for the Swiss in Cologne, that's for sure. Murat Yakin's side have been performing steadily at major tournaments for years, and there have not been many squad changes from Euro 2020, where they reached the quarter-finals. Yakin will hope his stable core can guide Switzerland through Group A.

Here it is 90 min Hungary vs Switzerland preview for Euro 2024.

Liverpool's Dominik Szoboszlai will captain his country in Germany this summer, and he is the man Hungary will turn to in attack. Freiburg's Robert Sallai is set to lead Rossi's line alongside Barnabas Varga.

RB Leipzig's Will Orban will man the Hungary backline, while veteran goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi has been named in the 26-man squad and should start on Saturday.

Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez is another name to keep an eye on.

Hungary predicted to face Switzerland (3-4-1-2): Gulacsi; Lang, Orban, Szalai; Bolla, Nagy, Schafer, Kerkez; Szoboszlai; Sallai, Varga.

Yakin is expected to name a familiar XI in Cologne on Saturday, with the likes of Yann Sommer, Ricardo Rodriguez, Granit Xhaka, and Xherdan Shaqiri all included.

Zeki Amdouni and Noah Okafor want to start up front given the doubts about Breel Embolo's fitness. The striker did not appear in Switzerland's final warm-up game against Austria.

Switzerland predicted to face Hungary (3-4-2-1): Sommer; Elvedi, Akanji, Rodriguez; Widmer, Freuler, Xhaka, Zuber; Shaqiri, Ndoye; Okafor.

Both sides will be relying on their defenses this summer, and their respective abilities to minimize transition periods will be key.

Given the similar fixtures, Saturday's game could be a cage affair as there are plenty of duels all over the field. There is work for both teams to cancel out, and both managers could be happy with a point in Cologne.

Each will fancy their chances of beating Scotland as a way to progress to the round of 16.

Prediction: Hungary 1-1 Switzerland
