Ratings of players like Ian Fray, Julian Gressel who stood out in the home win

Goals from Ian Fray and Leo Campana powered Inter Miami to a 2-1 win over MLS Cup champions Columbus Crew at Chaste Stadium.

How the game happened

The Herons couldn't have gotten off to a better start in front of their south Florida fans. Full-back Ian Fray — who has featured in the first team since injuring his ACL last summer — opened the scoring to put the Herons ahead after slotting home Julian Gressel's goal from an accurate corner.

Miami doubled the advantage in the 20th minute after missing chances from Leo Campana and Robert Taylor, who were setting up the likes of Matias Rojas and Luis Suarez. Gressel — who started on the right for the second game in a row in place of Lionel Messi — played Campana through on goal with a beautiful curling pass into the Ecuadorian's path, but Miami's number 8 could not convert from close range.

Campana managed to win the ball back after Patrick Schulte's save and put Taylor out of an even better position, but the Finn again couldn't get past the Crew-stopper. However, Gressel picked up the ball near the Columbus six-yard box and sent an inviting cross that Campana headed into the goal – and his first-time effort was saved before hitting a close-range shot into the roof of the net.

The south Florida team looked set to go into the break with a 2-0 lead until Cucho Hernandez scored. Aidan Morris found Hernandez closing in on the Herons' penalty area, and the Colombian somehow managed to get on the end of the midfielder's cross to pull one back for the Crew.

As expected, the Crew came out swinging for the second time with 45. Substitute Ryan Sailor tallied a crucial goal in his own box, and Drake Callender got revenge on Hernandez by denying the Columbus striker in a one-on-one situation. .

It was a surprising win in the end for Miami, who also picked up three points despite not being at their best for 90 minutes – mainly due to the fact that they lost several key players in their team due to injuries and the Copa America – – against a stellar Columbus team that lost one player on international duty.

This victory caused Miami to increase its points to 41 from the twenty games played by the team, sitting in first place in the Supporters' Shield. The Crew sit sixth in the Eastern Conference standings with 27 points from 16 games, and will be eager to get back into action quickly to get back in the win column.

GK: Drake Callender – 7/10 – Maybe I could have done better on Hernandez's strike in the first half as they didn't have a lot of pace in it. He denied Hernandez one-on-one later in the game to ensure Miami held on for the three points.

RB: Ian Fray – 8/10 – He is strong in defense and managed to open the scoring in his first appearance for Miami since injuring his ACL during the League Cup 2023.

CB: Serhiy Kryvtsov – 7/10 – The experienced defender played his part in the win with several key blocks and a breakaway.

CB: Noah Allen – 6/10 – I would have done better to track Hernandez's run into the box leading to the goal. It's pretty solid without that, though.

LB: Jordi Alba – 6/10 – A cool game by the veteran defender as he didn't get a chance to get up on the field and joined the attack.

CM: Benjamin Cremaschi – 6/10 – Cremaschi had a few good moments here and there but was very inconsistent.

CM: Sergio Busquets – 6/10 – It wasn't his usual 7/10 performance but it was enough to see a narrow victory for the hosts. The midfield duo of Darlington Nagbe and Aidan Morris is one of the most difficult midfielders in all of MLS and Busquets had trouble keeping up with Cremaschi and Bright.

CM: Yannick Bright – 6/10 – The player did not help or hinder his side.

RW: Julian Gressel – 8/10 – His best performance was seen by all when he grabbed the assist for the team's second goal.

ST: Leo Campana – 7/10 – His handling was solid and he made up for his missed left-footed effort from close range to put Miami in command.

LW: Robert Taylor – 6/10 – He took good positions throughout the final third but missed a big chance in the first 45. Luckily, Campana was able to get a near miss shortly after.
