Erika Cruz Stripped of WBA Title; Nazarena Romero-Mayerlin Rivas Rematch Ordered
Erika Cruz has been released from her title reign.
The two-division champion was stripped of the WBA 122-pound belt due to a drug test surrounding his latest fight. A sample collected on April 29 and tested on May 7 returned the findings of Stanozolol metabolites 16b-hydroxystanozolol, 3'- hydroxystanozolol and furosemide. This finding was made eleven days after her ten round draw on May 11 against Nazarena Romero in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
Cruz (17-2-1, 3 knockouts) will still face disciplinary action with the Commission de Box Aguascalientes, which has jurisdiction over the fight. A draw decision remains unchanged, although it is a moot point even if it is converted to a No Decision. Romero (13-0-2, 7 KOs) will get another shot at the vacant title.
When the results of the drug test were revealed, Cruz's team informed The Ring that they plan to fully cooperate with the investigation. A second “A” sample tested on May 31 yielded the same result, which Cruz was informed about on June 5.
Cruz then got until June 20 to request the testing of his “B” samples. That action was not taken, prompting the WBA to take action.
Samples are stored in WADA-approved laboratories for up to 180 days, the current length of his WBA-specific suspension. The sanctioning body has threatened to add another six months at the end of that period if he fails to see the process of testing the “B” sample.
Cruz is still free to fight at that time, pending any decision from the actual boxing commissioner. Sanctioning bodies only reserve the right to refuse authorization to fight for their qualifications or qualifications.
The decision ends his second title run after just one disqualified defense.
Cruz won the belt in a ten-round decision over Mayerlin Rivas (17-5-3, 11 KOs) last November in Inglewood, California. It came just nine months after her loss to Amanda Serrano (46-2-1, 30 KOs) in their memorable Feb. 12 featherweight bout. 2023. The relegation ended Cruz's long reign as the WBA featherweight title holder.
Meanwhile, Cruz's two most recent opponents will fight for the WBA 122-pound belt.
Romero is scheduled to face Rivas next in their rematch in June 2023. Their fight for the WBA junior featherweight title ended late in the fifth round. Romero was hurt by a clash of heads that seemed too bad to continue.
Rivas' only fight since then was his aforementioned loss to Cruz.
Romero-Rivas was ordered to face Oct. 20.
