Jaron “Boots” Ennis Stops David Avanesyan in Five

Written by: Sean Crose

IBF welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis put his title on the line Saturday night in his hometown of Philadelphia against David Avanesyan. Ennis was heavily favored to win the main event of the DAZN broadcast card, but boxing is a sport where it seems anything is possible.

Ennis, who appeared to be the odd one out over his opponent, immediately went at Avanesyan with his jab. Avanesyan went down with a flurry of blows late in the opening round. After resuming the action, Avanesyan was drilled by a series of shots from Ennis. The second round was more difficult. Ennis shot the attacker early, and Avanesyan came out strong later.

Ennis spent much of the third quarter hurting his man. While it's true that Avanesyan wasn't afraid to shoot his own, Ennis was clearly a stronger and stronger fighter. A good fourth quarter saw Ennis use Avanesyan as a punching bag. Still, Avanesyan was undoubtedly the hero, making the game fun. You had to wonder, though, how long it would be before Avanesyan was confused before Ennis' attack.

The answer was in less than one round, as Ennis' thunderous right sent Avanesyan to the mats in the fifth round. Avanesyan passed the count, but his face was bruised, bloody, and swollen. Still, he kept trying. Fortunately, however, the ring doctor wisely stopped the fight after the bell ended the round.
