Wayne Rooney gets a new job as a manager after leaving Birmingham

Wayne Rooney has found a new job as a manager, signing a three-year contract with Championship side Plymouth Argyle.

The Manchester United legend has been out of action since leaving Birmingham City in January 2024. His former employers were eventually relegated from the Championship, finishing one point behind Rooney's new side.

Rooney's time with Birmingham has been controversial. He replaced former manager John Eustace in October 2023, the club sat in sixth place in the table, but won just two of 15 games and was sacked in January, having seen the club fall into a relegation battle from which they could not escape. .

It is his third job in English football after playing with Birmingham and Derby County, both stages of the season in Major League Soccer and DC United.

Throughout his career, Rooney has officiated 152 games and overseen a total of 41 wins and 73 losses.

“Taking this position at Plymouth Argyle feels like the next great step in my career – and I'd like to thank the Chairman and Board for the faith they have shown in me,” Rooney said.

“This is an opportunity to be part of an exciting project. I'm looking forward to helping build a squad of players who will play wide football – and cheering on the Green Army.

“I've seen first-hand how talented the current squad of players are here – and the fantastic atmosphere at Home Park. The club is on an exciting long-term journey, with an ongoing program. I'm grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it.

“I can't wait for the Championship season to start in August.”
