Vinicius Jnr was named the best player

Real Madrid striker Vinicius Jnr has been named the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League Player of the Year after helping his side lift the trophy at Wembley on Saturday night.

The Brazilian played for Madrid all season as he got two points at home and on the African continent.

He also starred in Madrid's 2-0 defeat by Borussia Dortmund at the weekend, improving after a quiet first half to guide Carlo Ancelotti's improved side into the second half.

The 23-year-old successfully secured Madrid's title as European champions for a record 15th extra time by scoring his second goal seven minutes from time, taking Jude Bellingham's pass to his goal before slotting the ball past Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

It was the culmination of an outstanding season in Europe's top club competition.

Vinicius Jnr played 10 games in the Champions League, scoring six goals and assisting five more.

After the defeat to Dortmund he said: “I am very happy to be able to win another Champions League with this team, which has given me a lot.

“It's unbelievable. Not everyone can find and win it so many times.”

The award is decided by UEFA's Technical Observer panel.
