Afterwards, Rublev revealed that he had been fighting the virus for eight days and needed anesthesia to compete.

Before his stop in Madrid, Rublev shared that he could not put his shoe on as the inflammation, he thinks that the virus, caused swelling in his feet and finger.

“They were doing some kind of anesthesia on my finger, on my feet,” Rublev told reporters in Madrid. “Because my finger and feet somehow swell and start to double and all the pressure starts to be on the bone, and the pressure on the bone, when you have pressure on the bone, you can't even put your feet inside the bone. The feeling is the same as when you break a shoe, I think.

“So that's why they put me under anesthesia so I can't hear. Like I said, at least I was able to play without thinking.”

The virus weakened Rublev during the dramatic Madrid run but could not stop him from capturing his sixth clay court championship.

“Well, I'm still sick from everything. No, yes, I'm still sick, and tomorrow I think I'll go to the hospital for a full check-up,” said Rublev. “I don't know exactly what's going on, because I've been sick for eight, nine days, and this is unusual.

“The same, like, not really an improvement, which is strange, because usually all my life, if I'm sick, two, three days, maximum. Anyway, maybe a fever but nothing special. This time, for the first time I feel that my life is worse.”
