“So we are where we are and there will be changes. Well, Jeff, one thing we do know now is that Keefe and the players are talking on Monday and management isn't talking until . So we may not know about Keefe, then.

Be honest. I think Keefe is a better coach than the market gives him credit for. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Keith ends up going elsewhere and proving his critics in Toronto wrong. I think he's done a great job in really tough situations this year with all the injuries and everything.

And this is the one we're going to focus on. In three or four years we can all come back and look at this and say Elliotte was right, or Elliotte was wrong. And if I'm wrong, I'm sure I'll hear it, but it wouldn't surprise me at least if he goes somewhere else and does really well.

But look, I think the Maple Leafs are going to look at what else is out there. You'll remember going back to last summer, before they committed to keeping him and extending him, they definitely discussed it. Like if we don't bring him back, or if we don't help him, who makes sense? Who were we going to take in? Therefore it is impossible to believe that they have no ideas.

And it's impossible to believe, knowing the way this organization thinks and knowing the way it builds its roster, especially during the offseason, that they didn't or wouldn't consider someone like (Craig) Berube.

So one of the things that happens here is that they find that it is possible, what are their alternatives?

The only other people to talk about here will be (Brendan) Shanahan and (Mitch) Marner.

All right, again, Shanahan, the heat is on now. This will be Keith Pelley's decision. And for me, the only question here is, how much time does Pelley need to make the call? Do you keep him or move on?

And Pelley has been silent. He did everything he could to keep himself out of the news. And that's the question I have. What is his time to make this decision?

Now, in addition to that timeline, I had someone say to me, 'If they get rid of Shanahan who's going to take his place?'

Honestly, I'm not sure that's the right question to ask because I'm not sure ownership wants that kind of management anymore. I can't believe they want a president of hockey operations. Pelley is the acting president of Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment and it's possible that that layer could be removed and replaced and the general manager, (Brad) Treliving, just reports to him.
