On Wednesday night's Pro Box TV Promotions, Robbie Davies Jr. returned after a long layoff to put a perfect storm in the cage against Sergey Lipinets – his record now stands at 18-3-1 with a win over the Brit.
In a bloody, brilliant battle, Davies Jr. (now 23-5) and Lipinet gave it all in the name of fun. Score cards read 95-92, 96-91 and 98-89; although this suggests that the bout was more one-sided than it was played out to be.
The first rounds proved to be surprisingly soft, Davies Jr. practicing the ring after such a long time. Both fighters felt out of the third round, Davies Jr. pushing hard at the end with a short left hook, before continuing to apply pressure in the fourth.
Lipinet, however, had many stores of power throughout his body, using a brutal and crushing right hand to crush Davies Jr. on the canvas. The Liverpudlian got up from the ground, followed by a rush of blood from his nose.
Despite all his efforts, Lipinet handled the punches better than Davies Jr.
Davies Jr. he went down twice in the eighth round, arguably one of the best rounds of the year so far. With two down, Davies Jr. he just got braver and finished the round strong with violence.
Lipinet has done enough, though. He took the lead after 10 laps.
Lightweight prospect Tsendbaatar Erdenbat (10-0) defeated his opponent, Alberto Mercado (17-7-1), within their scheduled eight rounds. Erdenbat was relentless and aggressive, unable to give up everything. In a division bereft of talent, Erdenbat will be a surprise contender in the future; certainly, Erdenbat did better against Mercado than Floyd Schofield, who failed to finish the Puerto Rican in their fight.
Elsewhere, heavyweight contender Fernely Feliz Jr. (8-0) earned a solid, if hard-fought, win over Cesar Navarro (11-2). Feliz Jr. he proved to be a more methodical boxer, with more skill to show for it, despite Navarro's ability to overpower the young heavyweight at times. The scores showed dominance, with 78-74, 79-73 and 79-73 for Feliz Jr.
Also on the card, another prospect, Robert Meriwether III (6-0) will show his best boxing in a scheduled demolition of opponent Victor Manuel Lopez Gala (5-1). Although he is only 19 years old, his talent is clear and visible, as all judges scored the six rounds 60-54.
Pro Box Promotions delivers yet another undercard but strong card from Florida.
