Head coach of the Milwaukee Admirals Karl Taylor was eager to make a decision in Game 5 of his team's Central Division semifinal series against Texas on Sunday.
Taylor suspected the Stars might make a change after Milwaukee won back-to-back games in Games 3 and 4.
Taylor was right. Texas turned rookie Ben KrawsHobey Baker Award nominee and St. Lawrence University this season before becoming a champion in March.
“I thought they might change the goalie to get a different flow,” Taylor told reporters after the Admirals' 5-3 series win. “We were ready to try to give him a tough action with bodies and pucks early.”
The Admirals go forward Zach L'Heureux greeted the Kraws with two goals in the opening 58 seconds.
Earlier in the series, Taylor did the same with his Texas counterpart Neil Graham did before the 5th game. After falling behind 2-0 in the series, Taylor stayed Yaroslav Askarov in our favor Troy Grosenick.
“You're trying to do a little energy and a different look,” Taylor said. “It doesn't mean it didn't work (just) because we got those two quick goals.”
As the Rochester Americans season ends over the weekend, the Buffalo Sabers officially announced the addition of Seth Appert to their staff as an assistant coach for 2024-25 on Monday.
Appert spent four seasons as the Amerks' head coach, leading the team to three consecutive Calder Cup Playoff appearances including a trip to the conference finals in 2023.
“I'm excited about this opportunity, I'm excited to work with a staff that has a lot of NHL experience,” Appert told The Americans. Andrew Mossbrooks. “It makes it very special because I can live within the organization. I'm proud of what we've done here in Rochester. Buffalo is closer to being a franchise team than it was four years ago. For me it's an opportunity to try to see you clearly. I am happy about that because I have invested a lot of money in this organization.”
Most of Buffalo's young players developed under Appert in Rochester, incl Jack Quinn, JJ Peterka, Peyton Krebs, Mattias Samuelsson again Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. Top Sabers prospects who spent time in Rochester and Buffalo this season include Jiri Kulich, Isak Rosén, Devon Levy, Matthew Savoie, Lukas Rousek again Ryan Johnson.
“I will be an American for the rest of my life,” Appert said. “I was taken in by our staff, our city, so it makes you feel at home. This is an incredibly special place.”
