“The other thing I was thinking Jeff, is, is there any way they buy (Jesperi) Kotkaniemi? He is 23 years old. So it's a 1/3 purchase, and it could save them $20 million.

He now has six years left on his contract, which would make it 12 years but only $835,000 because there are no bonuses. So there is money, like I said it saves them $20 million. So there is a financial reason for them to do it.

NHL Rumors: The Carolina Hurricanes and Their Unrestricted Free Agents

You know if you look at his ice time during the playoffs, his biggest minutes per game was 18:14. That was in a double overtime, double overtime game against the Islanders. In Game 6 he scored 10:51. In the last seven games he has only three minutes over 10 and has not scored 11.

So, that is something they will have to ask themselves. Now maybe they think he is still a rising player and they can get more from them. That is the reason not to do it.

But one thing is, I think there were organizations that said look, we signed this guy to the offer sheet. We have to get on with it. I don't believe Carolina is one of those teams. I think Carolina can make a decision based on what is best for their organization. And we will cut our losses if we have to.

And the fact that the purchase is 1/3 and planned as it happens, there is a real financial incentive to do it.

LA, (Pierre-Luc) Dubois had many bonuses. It wasn't the same. They just came out and said they would do it. I don't know, I wonder if Carolina is considering this.”
