Something I found while re-watching Game 1:
When Rudy Gobert checked in 2Q, the Mavs got SIX STRONG BASKETS AT THE RIM. Dallas did everything they wanted without Gobert on the court.

I wrote about Rudy Gobert, the unlikely leader of the Western Conference in coverage this postseason, and how the Dallas Mavericks showed his great value last night: tomthefinder.com/p/you-wont-bel… – 1:33 PM

In Game 1, Minnesota's defensive rating was 100 with Rudy Gobert on the court and 165 in 10 minutes. He often thought how he defended pick-and-rolls was smart and not why the Mavs were successful.

What is Draymond saying tonight lol – 11:53 PM

Gobert is +10 tonight. Finch said when he came off the floor it was very easy for Dallas to get to the rim. – 11:10 p.m

Big mistake on that last play by Dallas—blowing the KAT instead of switching—but Minnesota can't make them pay. McDaniels looked good in the corner but shoved it to Conley instead. Luke breaks the reception on Gobert. – 10:53 PM

Luke rejects Gobert's reception… A la Gobert – 10:53 PM

Ben Anderson @BensHoops

Luka Doncic blasting Gobert's lob is as impressive as Gobert blasting the Jokic/Gordon lob in the last series.
That was crazy. – 10:52 PM

When Gobert sets up the KAT the defense should automatically switch every time. – 10:43 PM

This would be an interesting time to throw a surprise blitz or (more interestingly) for Gobert to start transitioning to a bait mismatch progression. – 10:36 PM

That KAT/Gobert 4/5 pick-and-roll only draws the Dallas frontcourt players out of the paint regularly. Gets PJ on Gobert and Gafford/Lively on KAT in the deep end of the pool. The Wolves will continue to spam it as long as Dallas keeps changing it. – 10:12 PM

Dane Moore @DaneMooreNBA

Lowkey smart move here on Gobert: He knows Dallas wants to double post KAT from the baseline, so he moves away from Lively while watching Lively's 3 on the head clock.
(And it's worth noting that Dallas wants to bring doubles from the base. pic.twitter.com/xKTVRrf6D89:24 PM

Jaden McDaniels hit his first 3 of the game, so when he found the room, Doncic got even closer.
Smart decision by McDaniels to attack, and he gets Gobert to come down. It all happened by finding out that you are a shooting hazard. pic.twitter.com/AzBENZDpwx8:59 PM

Think this thing is a good illustration of how the Wolves want to guard Dallas
– McDaniels-Doncic; Edwards-Irving; Conley-Jones; Cities-Washington; Gobert-Gafford
– Have McDaniels give full pressure
– KAT to touch it on the football screen action
– Rudy and up, but maybe not pic.twitter.com/lR4wrbjEcy8:49 PM

Wes Goldberg @wcgoldberg

The decline of Gobert and KAT was a good twist for the Wolves to get out of but Luke and Kyrie will figure it out. But I think they got that. – 8:46 PM

Jon Krawczynski @Jon Krawczynski

It's really fun to start this. Mavs make tough shots. Gobert gets physical with Gafford. 3 boards for Rudy, 4 for Gafford. A good fight. – 8:43 PM

Chuck Cooperstein @coopmavs

Mavs starters: Jones, Washington, Gafford, Irving, Doncic
MIN starters: McDaniels, Towns, Gobert, Edwards, Conley

“I'm like, when I look at guys with IQ, I think one of the best things about Bron is his IQ and I can respect that. So I loved the opportunity to just see day to day how his mind works like, if something happens where there's an adjustment that needs to be made, how you process that, what's your process, things you go through, how you stay here or get there. I would love the opportunity. But for that reason I would like to play with Bron.” -via TalkBasket / May 23, 2024

In a recent interview with Shaquille O'Neal on The Big Podcast, Green expressed his desire to play with James, citing the opportunity to witness James' basketball IQ in action every day. “I would love to play with Bron,” Green said, emphasizing his admiration for James' basketball skills and the opportunity to see his decision-making process on and off the court. -via TalkBasket / May 23, 2024

Despite being a smaller team than the Timberwolves, the Mavericks outshot them 62-to-38 in the paint and made eight turnovers. Minnesota has very good defenders, especially Rudy Gobert and Jaden McDaniels, two players who were recently named to the All-Defense teams this week. It was a goal for the Timberwolves to look at their opponents and believe that their top two stoppers can undoubtedly contain players like Dončić and Kyrie Irving on their own. “We had to make sure we got Rudy out of the basket as much as possible,” Irving said afterward. “We understand that's the Defensive Player of the Year, that they have (two) players who are first-team defensive, second-team players.” -via The New York Times / May 23, 2024

Christopher Hine: Rudy Gobert: “I have to do a better job on rebounds. I can't let these guys get offensive rebounds. I will get better.” – with Twitter @ChristopherHine / May 23, 2024

Dane Moore: Rudy Gobert on Jaden McDaniels making his first All-Defensive team in his career: “That was really important to me, just to see him get his first team all-defensive. He wants to be on the first team, and I think he's a quarterback in the top five in this league, but it's good to get the first one. And now he gets to show the world who he is on the biggest stage. So I'm proud of him, the work he's put in, the maturity he's shown all year and especially now in the playoffs here without him. The sky's the limit. But he's got his first. I'm happy for him.” – with Twitter @DaneMooreNBA / May 21, 2024
