The Canaries have appointed Dane Thorup as their new coach

Norwich City have appointed FC Nordsjaelland manager Johannes Hoff Thorup as their new manager after the clubs agreed a compensation deal.

The 35-year-old Dane has signed a three-year deal to replace David Wagner, who was sacked less than 24 hours after the Canaries were hammered 4-0 by Leeds in the Championship semi-final at Elland Road.

Thorup told City's website: “I'm happy, I hope the fans are happy too. I hope we can do something together, it is very important that they are proud of the team.

“I feel connected to the people, the club and the city. Everyone I have met so far is humble, nice and prompt.

“I have my ideas and I have my principles on how we will play, but I am also here to listen to some of the good things that have been done.

“I have to make sure I'm very clear that this is something we're doing together and everyone should have that feeling.”

Thorup will be assisted at Carrow Road by Glen Riddersholm, a former coach of Swedish top-flight club Norkkoping.

City finished sixth in their second season back in the second tier after relegation from the Premier League but have appointed a coach known for developing young players – which the Canaries say is their main goal going forward.

Thorup rose from assistant coach to take charge of Danish club Nordsjaelland in January 2023. He started as youth coach at the club in 2015.

They finished second to qualify for the Europa Conference League qualifiers in his first season and this season they reached the group stage of the competition and also finished in the top four in the Danish Superliga.

Canaries sporting director Ben Knapper said: “After a rigorous and rigorous process, Johannes stood out from an impressive list of candidates.

“Throughout our interactions, it was clear that Johannes is completely aligned with our vision and values. He is a proven developer, with a clear and visual style of play.

“We believe Johannes will be the perfect fit for the next phase of our new and exciting journey.”
