The Spurs are eyeing a move for Brennan Johnson 2.0

The summer transfer window is just around the corner, and it will be a busy one for Tottenham Hotspur as they look to build on Ange Postecoglou's excellent first season.

Last year's window was dominated by the saga surrounding Harry Kane, and although that did not please the Spurs faithful, they managed to get several talents through the door themselves.

The likes of James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario and Brennan Johnson have made a noticeable impact on the club this season, and based on recent reports, Daniel Levy and Co could be repeating the trick that got them the Welshman.

According to a recent report from Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Nottingham Forest's Callum Hudson-Odoi and could make an offer 'before 30 June.'

The report claims that the Lilywhites view the ex-Chelsea player as someone with “massive” amounts of potential and, given Tricky Trees' precarious financial situation, someone who could be signed this summer for a relatively small fee.

Reports earlier this month suggested that the England man could be sold for around £30m, and while that is certainly not expensive, it is not unreasonable for a player who has reached double figures in goal involvements in all competitions this season.

It might not have gone down well with fans to begin with, but the last time Levy and Co signed a Forest player, it was a good one.

The Spurs could repeat their Johnson strategy

The Lilywhites' last signing from Forest was Johnson, who joined the club last summer for an estimated £47.5m, and while some were skeptical at the time, it would be fair to say that the Welshman has had a fantastic debut season at N17.

In his 35 games for the first team, the 23-year-old striker scored five goals and provided ten assists, which means he averaged a goal involvement every 2.3 games, which is very good for a young player in a new club.

Furthermore, as the Nottingham-born striker has only played 2504 minutes, he averages a goal involvement every 166.9 minutes or every 1.85 90s.

In comparison, while Hudson-Odoi has been less productive, his return of eight goals and two assists in 34 games is still very impressive when you consider that he is playing for a team that will be under most Premier League games, and when broken down by minutes, the Englishman has averaged a goal involvement every minute of 218.9, or every 2.4 90s.

It is also worth remembering that this season was the first without a major injury that hampered his development, and look, he presented, suggesting that the Lilywhites' assessment of his potential may be true, as long as he remains fit.

Finally, while the Wandworth-born “amazingly talented” gem, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has not had the best of times in recent years, he is still the player Bayern Munich were willing to pay £70m to sign in 2020, so if Postecoglou can manage his injury problems in fairness, there's no reason why he couldn't convince him to be the player many thought he would be.

Ultimately, signing Hudson-Odoi is a gamble, but based on his performances this season, the fair money and the sky-high potential that many believed he possessed, he should be taken, and the last player to leave the club. The City Ground worked very well.
