Koopmeiners withdrew that the Dutch would face difficulties again

The Netherlands suffered a second injury in 24 hours this morning with news that Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners will miss Euro 2024.

Koopmeiners suffered muscle discomfort while preparing for last night's friendly against Iceland and subsequent tests revealed the problem was serious enough for him to miss the tournament.

A post on X from the Oranje account read: “Teun Koopmeiners missed Euro 2024.

“The midfielder will not be able to participate after injuring himself while preparing for the match against Iceland yesterday.

“We are thinking of you Teun.”

Another disappointment for Koeman

It is a big mistake for the coach of the Netherlands, Ronald Koeman, who has to play without another midfielder who started first, Frenkie De Jong, who was ruled out yesterday after failing to recover from an ankle injury.

De Jong was named in the squad despite having made just three appearances for Barcelona since March but was forced to concede defeat in his battle for fitness.

Koeman said: “The tests have shown that he will not be there.

“In the next three weeks he will not be ready to play at this level. It doesn't make sense to keep him.”

Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen, who spent last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund and played a major role as they reached the Champions League final, has been called up and will meet the rest of the squad at their Wolfsburg base today.

The Netherlands are in Group D and will open their campaign against Poland on Sunday.
