Barcelona congratulate Real Madrid after winning La Liga
Barcelona congratulated Real Madrid on winning the 2023/24 La Liga title after their 4-2 defeat at Girona ended their hopes of defending the title.
Los Blancos needed just one win from their last four games to secure the trophy following their 3-0 win against Cadiz. However, they were given away early due to La Blaugrana's misfortune at Montilivi Municipality.
Barca were 2-1 up at half-time against Girona after goals from Andreas Christensen and Robert Lewandowski, with Artem Dovbyk replying for the hosts.
However, Porto scored two goals either side of Miguel Gutierrez's effort to help Michel's side win 4-2 and move into second place in the table.
In line with tradition, Barca sent a message of congratulations to Carlo Ancelotti and his team on social media which reads as follows.: “Congratulations to Real Madrid for winning the league title.”
In a press conference after the match, manager Xavi congratulated his rivals Madrid as they were declared champions later in the evening, he said (via. Diario AS): “They should be congratulated. They are the ones who have done a lot.”
What's wrong, Xavi explained: “The truth is that, in a way, we have lost control of the team because of the raw mistakes that don't happen at this level. We have talked a lot about these kinds of mistakes and they still happen.
“The game was controlled; we had Girona in half an hour and we gave them away in the last half hour. Summary of the season. It was like that two games for Madrid, two for Girona. You have to change. a lot of competition.
“I think we will learn and next season we will compete better. We will continue to fight. Next season we will have to fix things.”
Barcelona last won La Liga in the 2022/23 season, marking their 27th victory in the honour.
