Gareth Bale has named the Real Madrid star as his pick to win the Ballon d'Or

Former Real Madrid player Gareth Bale believes Jude Bellingham is in with a good chance of winning the Ballon d'Or after a successful first season in La Liga.

The 20-year-old has risen to become one of the best players in world football after moving to Madrid from Borussia Dortmund last summer.

His first season in Spain was nothing short of spectacular, winning the La Liga title and scoring 23 goals in 40 games for the club. Bellingham's success earned Madrid a place in the Champions League final, where they will face host Dortmund.

Bellingham is expected to play a major role in England, as they look to do well in the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament in Germany.

If he is to stand out for Gareth Southgate's side, Bale reckons Bellingham are in with a chance of lifting the Ballon d'Or, ending England's 23-year wait for a winner.

When asked by PA if the talented ex-Birmingham City player was in the vote to be named the best player in the world this year, Bale replied 'of course.'

“Having a big international tournament will play a big role in winning that cup. The Copa America is still there, so I think there is a lot to play for. [between Bellingham and Vinicius] because to win the Ballon d'Or you need to win trophies for the team.

“If there is an international competition, you must provide for that stage as well, like this one [Lionel] Messi did it a few years ago. Obviously there is a lot to prove, but he has put in a lot of hard work.

Along with Bellingham, Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior is also in contention to win the Ballon d'Or this season. The wide striker has been in big games for Los Blancos this season, between Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the final stages of the 2023/24 season.
